Open a password-protected archive on iPad
Password support depends on the archive format. The current 7zen release opens encrypted RAR files, while encrypted 7z and ZIP files are not yet supported.
| Format | Current password support |
|---|---|
| RAR (.rar) | Supported |
| 7-Zip (.7z) | Not supported when encrypted |
| ZIP (.zip) | Not supported when encrypted |
Open a password-protected RAR
Open the RAR in 7zen
Tap the .rar in Files, Mail, Safari downloads, or AirDrop, or choose it from Browse Files inside 7zen.
Enter the password
7zen prompts when the archive needs a password. Enter it exactly; archive passwords are case-sensitive.
Preview or extract
After the archive unlocks, inspect its contents, preview supported files, and extract everything or an individual file.
What to do with an encrypted 7z or ZIP
The current public version of 7zen can open ordinary 7z and ZIP archives, but not password-encrypted ones. If 7zen reports that the encrypted format is unsupported:
- Ask the sender for an unencrypted copy through a secure channel, or for the contents in a supported password-protected RAR.
- Alternatively, decrypt the archive with a trusted compatible tool on another device, then transfer the resulting files to the iPad or iPhone.
- Never upload a sensitive archive to an unfamiliar “free unzip” website.
If the password does not work
- Check capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and similar-looking characters.
- Confirm that the password belongs to this exact archive.
- For a multi-part RAR, keep all parts together and open the first part.
- Download the archive again if it may be incomplete or damaged.
Frequently asked questions
Can 7zen open a password-protected RAR file?
Yes. Open the RAR in 7zen, enter the password when prompted, and then preview or extract its contents.
Can 7zen open an encrypted 7z or ZIP file?
Not in the current public App Store version. Encrypted 7z and encrypted ZIP archives must currently be decrypted with another compatible tool.
Does 7zen transmit archive passwords?
No. 7zen has no network access. Password handling and archive processing remain on the device.
